News:
At our recent meeting on Feb. 22, 2012, we had a wonderful guest speaker, Claire Conner, who talked about her book Wrapped in the Flag: What I Learned About Growing Up In America's Radical Right and Why it Matters Now and how she changed her views. Conner was a member of the John Birch Society and her parents helped put the Tea Party in power. She covered the right wing's attacks on women, and we had a rather large crowd show up that was very intrigued by the lively discussion.
We collaborated with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Clearwater to show the documentary film, "Women, War and Peace", on March 8th for International Women's Day. It was a very moving film, and we had an interesting discussion afterwards.

inellas NOW recently received some press coverage, which you can view
here: "Local Feminists Continue to Fight for Women's Rights" at Tampa Bay
Newspapers.
The National NOW Conference of 2011, themed, "Daring to Dream: Building a
Feminist Future", was held in Tampa this past June and was very informative
and exciting. It included speakers such as Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder,
Florida NOW member and former national NOW president Patricia Ireland, Tampa
Police Chief Jane Castor, and many other national leaders and advocates. There
were workshops held on a wide variety of issues pertaining to equality and great
plenary sessions, as well as numerous resolutions which were passed on the
Sunday of the conference. It was a wonderful event, and included a
protest in front of Senator Marco Rubio's office which is conveniently located
directly across the street from the hotel where the conference was held. There
was also an award given to the girls of Girls' Inc. of Pinellas County for the
wonderful video they made which you can view below, and the video was
shown at the conference as well. You can see some pictures here now, and
more pictures are to come on this website.
In March, 2011 we had an excellent presentation by young women from Girls'
Inc. on "Famous Women in History" to celebrate Women's History Month.
On January 29, 2011 we did our annual rally for the anniversary of Roe v. Wade
in downtown St. Pete! You can see pictures on the Flickr photo roll below; just
scroll down.
April 30th - May 2nd, 2010 was the annual state conference of Florida NOW,
and you can see pictures from this successful event below.
March 10th, 2010 we held an awesome screening of the amazing film Iron
Jawed Angels, which tells the story of Alice Paul's role in the suffrage movement
which won women the right to vote in 1920. Yes, that's right, we have only had
the right to vote in the U.S. for 90 years!
Below see a video we viewed at one of our meetings in 2010, created by
elementary school-aged girls at Girls, Inc. in Pinellas Park about a sexist video
that is in the neighborhood of their center. They did an amazing job on this and
you should definitely check it out.

Circus McGurkus 2009
Pinellas NOW and the NOW Tampa Bay Area Caucus (TBAC) had a table at Circus McGurkus in St. Petersburg in October, 2009. Each year, our chapter tables at this event, which is full of radical and progressive-minded folks from all walks of life and various community organizations and activist groups. Plus, there's live entertainment, speakers and good food to be had. Make sure you come out next year if you missed the CM this year. It is one of the best events that finds its home in St. Petersburg.
